Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray Release Date

Out of Sony Ericsson’s recently announced batch of Android smartphones, the Xperia Ray looks like having the widest appeal. It’s stylish, compact and not too shabby on the spec front either. Read on for the full lowdown, as well as a likely release date.

X(peria) Ray specs
- 1Ghz Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8255 CPU, Adreno 205 GPU
- 512MB RAM, 300MB internal storage, 4GB microSD (up to 32GB)
- 3.3-inch Reality display, Mobile Bravia Engine, 854 x 480 resolution
- 8.1-megapixel camera, LED flash, Exmor R sensor, 720p video recording
- Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1, microUSB
- Android 2.3
- 111 x 53 x 9.4mm, 100 grams
If you thought Sony Ericsson was done with pocket rockets after the reveal of the new Xperia Mini range, you’d be wrong. The Xperia Ray features an ever so slightly bigger (but still decidedly petite) 3.3-inch display which also manages to keep the resolution at a solid 854 x 480.
That’s pretty much standard for modern 4-inch screens, so you can imagine how sharp it’ll look in this reduced form – especially with Sony’s Mobile Bravia Engine working its magic on the picture quality.
Despite such a small screen and an extremely light and thin body (less than 10mm thick and weighing just 100 grams), the Xperia Ray packs quite a punch thanks to its 1GHz Snapdragon processor and Adreno 205 graphics chip. Again, this is comparable to Sony Ericsson’s current big hitters like the Xperia Arc and Xperia Play.
Snaps and dates
Most impressive of all, though, is the Xperia Ray’s 8.1-megapixel camera. It’s not just the megapixel count that stands out – it’s the presence of Sony’s Exmor R image sensor, which makes for better low-light performance and sharper pictures. Again, it can be found in larger Sony Ericsson devices, but it’s great to see it cropping up in the compact Xperia Ray.
If recent reports are to be believed, this stylish smartphone will be hitting the UK next month. According to online retailer Play, the Xperia Ray will be appearing on these shores on August 15.
This date is far from official, of course, but with the fourth quarter of 2011 shaping up to be one of the biggest ever for new smartphone releases (iPhone 5, Nexus Prime, Nokia Sea Ray) it would be wise for Sony Ericsson to get in quick with this subtly enticing compact offering.
